Manistee Early Childhood Center
Begindergarten
COMING SOON! The Begindergarten program is currently unavailable for the 25/26 school year, however we are working to develop this program for the near future.
Begindergarten is an educational program, sometimes called developmental kindergarten or Young 5s, designed to bridge the gap between Preschool and traditional Kindergarten. It’s primarily intended for children who may benefit from an extra year to develop academic, social, and emotional skills before starting Kindergarten.

Welcome to Begindergarten
Begindergarten is for children that do not meet the age requirements of the PreK for All program, but may benefit from an outdoor education-based growth year before entering Kindergarten. Children that attend begindergarten would continue on to Kindergarten the following school year.
In our Waldorf-inspired begindergarten or young-5s program, we understand that children need basic tools before beginning kindergarten—but we also understand that their brains are at this critical time developing structures and habits that will shape their lifelong learning.
Based in current early childhood science, our program strengthens abilities through:
- Short-Term Memory
- Flexible Thinking
- Impulse Control
- Creative Thinking
- Connection to Nature
These skills lay the foundation for academic success, social understanding, and personal growth.
Our Beliefs:
- Thinking begins with feeling and imagination
- Play is a form of exploration and critical thinking
- Children thrive in relationships and rhythm
The Research Behind Our Practice
What the Science Says:
- Executive function skills are better predictors of school success than early reading or math skills. (Center on the Developing Child, Harvard)
- Imaginative play enhances cognitive flexibility and creative problem-solving. (American Academy of Pediatrics)
- Waldorf-type methods align with best practices in supporting attention span, self-regulation, and deep learning. (Journal of Educational Research)

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if Begindergarten is right for my child?
Begindergarten may be the right choice for your child if they are turning 5 years old between June and November of the new school year. Additionally, a recommendation may be made by a GSRP or preschool teacher who has observed readiness behaviors. The ESI-3 Parent Questionnaire is also a tool we use to help determine a student’s placement.
This is not a decision you need to make on your own. Reach out to us and we will provide the help you need to make the right choice for your child.
What is the ESI-3 Parent Questionnaire?
The Early Screening Inventory, Third Edition (ESI-3) is a short questionnaire that gives families a chance to share what their child can do at home. It focuses on areas like language, motor skills, and social development. Your answers help us get a fuller picture of your child’s strengths and needs, and support the best placement for their learning journey—whether that’s Kindergarten or Begindergarten. There are no “right” or “wrong” answers—just your honest observations!
What are typical things that my child will be doing in Begindergarten?
Begindergarten offers a researched-based curriculum backed by developmental science. Our program strengthens self-regulation and thinking skills through:
- Working with clay = sensory learning
- Discovering in nature = emotional regulation
- Listening circle = language & empathy
- Building blocks = spatial reasoning
- Music & physical education = physical, social and emotional development
In which school building is Begindergarten held?
At the conclusion of the school year, work immediately began at the former Madison Elementary building in Filer Township in preparation for the relocation of the Manistee Early Childhood Center programming from Jefferson Elementary. As the summer has progressed, this work has met some challenges.
Although we would like to be reporting otherwise, we will continue the Manistee Early Childhood Center programming at Jefferson Elementary for the beginning of the 2025/26 school year. Because work at the new location is not yet complete, we believe meeting state licensing requirements for this new facility prior to the beginning of the school year will not be attainable. The Jefferson Elementary facility is currently compliant with licensing requirements; therefore, we can continue offering early childhood services at that building while final preparations are made at our new space.
The delay of this move will keep all preschool, begindergarten, and kindergarten students at the Jefferson Elementary building, as well as before and after care services until we are able to finalize the new space and arrange for the move of our classrooms. We are working closely with the construction superintendent to bring this project to completion and to confirm a date for the move. Additional details will be shared as they become available.
As always, we extend gratitude to our staff for their dedication to our early childhood programs and their support and flexibility as we transition to this new space and grow the services we offer to our community.
We are excited to share the new space with you once it is complete. Renovations are being made to classrooms, playgrounds, and other amenities to provide space scaled for our youngest learners. We feel this configuration will welcome our newest Mariners and their families to the MAPS district, serving as an easily accessible and very friendly start to their learning experience.
How is Begindergarten different from Kindergarten?
Traditional Kindergarten | Begindergarten |
Mostly indoors, with an hour of outdoor time via recess | Outdoor learning is a core principle, both in the school forest and playground |
Group learning and independent practice | Individual learning and group practice |
“Specials” are separate from classroom learning | Music and Physical Education are embedded within core learning |
Math and reading are aligned with State Standards for 1st grade. | Curriculum is centered on experiential learning and problem-solving. Does not overlap Kindergarten standards, so it is its own unique grade level. |
Lunch room for all meals | Meals in the classroom |
Report cards reflect the progress on State KG learning standards (preparing for 1st grade) | Intentionally slow the pace so children can deeply engage with ideas, materials, and each other. |
If my child attend Begindergarten, will they still go to Kindergarten?
Yes. The Begindergarten program is intended to prepare students with the skills needed for success in Kindergarten.
Does Begindergarten follow the same schedule as the K-12 school year?
Yes. Begindergarten follows the same start and finish dates for the school year as well as the start and finish times of the school day. Before and after care options are available for families in need of that option.
