Dear MAPS Families & Staff,
During a routine inspection of the chemistry lab at Manistee Middle High
School at 525 Twelfth Street late this afternoon, potentially dangerous
materials were identified. Out of an abundance of caution, MAPS
administrators took immediate action to evacuate the building and lock down
all entrances.
Manistee City Police & Fire Departments have been consulted, the materials
appear to be stable, and a plan involving the Michigan State Police is
underway for the safe removal of the chemicals.
MAPS administrators are working to identify the origin of the materials and
to determine why materials of this nature might have been included in the
inventory of the chemistry lab.
Staff, students and all members of the public are asked to stay clear of
the building until the work to remove the materials has been complete. This
includes all exterior spaces surrounding the building.
We extend our gratitude to city law enforcement and fire chief for their
timely response and support.
Sincerely,
Ron Stoneman, Superintendent
Manistee Area Public Schools
